Don't get too excited....

This is not going to be an everyday blog. I'd like to think so, but I'll say right up front - family comes first{and often sleep a close second}, so if a few days go by with no postings, just know we're hanging out and having a fabulous time.
However, I appear to be on a roll (or starving for adult conversation) at the moment. Although this isn't technically a conversation is it? The kids are sleeping, the house is quiet and so this is allowing me to savor it all a wee bit longer.
Today was one of those days when our darling Matthew was unhappy. Plain and simple. This puts a wrinkle into our day as the other children's main goal is to cheer up crying babes. It's hard to read about Newton's Laws, nominative case pronouns, or figure out an algebra equation with screeching (at quite impressive volumes) in the background.
It's in these moments that I remind myself to breath in and breath out, to remind myself of the flexibility of homeschooling, and to let go of the schedule. Why is this so hard for me and my schooled-brain?
Joshua figured Matthew just wanted to do school too. So he pulled up the little rocking chair (that was actually mine when I was a little girl and Grandpa Gray refinished it for me) gave Matthew a pencil and continued with his bookwork. Guess what? Matthew sat there happily for at least 15 minutes!
Oh, if you're wondering about the little table Joshua is working on, those are his knees ABOVE the tabletop! What a child will do for a little elbow room. I think we'll have to check out some desks at Ikea on our next Edmonton trip.
Typically everyone is at the main table which does get quite busy with everyone's books and supplies.
Art isn't Joshua's favorite. He often asks if he has to do it. I find it very interesting that once he gets going, he concentrates and seems to enjoy the process very much. Today we worked with oil pastels and the kids were learning about blending colors through a natural environment. Joshua chose a sunset over the ocean. It's now hanging over the little table and looks so cheery!
Sarah on the other hand loves art and often has one or two pieces of artwork to show for every 'assignment'. Here she was drawing trees and blending sky colors and grasses.
Megan pulled out a big book on Alberta for a little inspiration. The assignment was to go outside, but our view isn't nearly as pretty. She drew lovely mountains against a blue/purple sky. It was stunning.
A perfect activity to relax & enjoy.

  3. I've had to include Alba for quite some time now just to get things done with the boys. All she wants is to be included.
